The Benefits of Eating Like a Horse
From: Alternatives FOR THE HEALTH-CONCIOUS INDIVIDUAL by DR. DAVID G. WILLIAMSRe: Diamond V - XPC Yeast Culture, published in Oct. 2007 issueThe Benefits of Eating Like a HorseBy the time you get this issue, I’ll be back from New Zealand and Australia. I had meetings scheduledwith both human and animal nutritional researchers. Longtime reader of Alternatives will probablyremember that many Dr. David G. Williams of the nutritional discoveries I uncover have their beginningsin the animal world. In fact, some of my most useful discoveries have come in this manner. I’mnot talking about household pets, however, but what are sometimes referred to as performance or productionanimals. There’s a huge difference in the attitude people take toward these creatures.Pets are very often treated like young children, particularly when it comes to what they are fed. Wetend to “reward” our children with dessert or some other treat if they finish the rest of their meal. Mostchildren learn when very young that proper behavior can be the path to receiving such treats. And, I’lladmit, I can be as guilty as the next person when it comes to offering “treats” for good behavior. Asimilar thing happens with our pets. We generally think of it as a nice thing to do. After all, it doesn’t getmuch better than to watch the joy it brings, and giving the treats quickly endears us to the child or pet.But moderation is the key; if overdone, we may be doing more harm than good in the long run. This doesn’t happen with performance or production animals. Treats are generally not part of theprogram. Whether it happens to be a racehorse or a heifer in a feedlot, the primary goal is to keep theanimal healthy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condoning the use of steroids or antibiotics in livestock orthe way these animals are often times raised. The point here is how the health of these animals is veryoften a top consideration, primarily because the animals’ health is directly rated to the bottom line orprofit from such ventures. Unlike the way many people treat their pets or their own body.Owners of livestock know that spending money on prevention pays off in the long run. And unhealthytreats don’t have a place in their feeding programs. Sickly animals and too many vet bills canquickly put an owner out of business. As such, owners are always on the lookout for supplements orother techniques that will improve the health of their animals for the least cost.A Dusting of HealthA few years ago I got a very interesting call concerning an animal feed supplement. It involved acompany called Diamond V Mills located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They make an animal feed supplementfrom a fermented yeast culture. Supplements like this aren’t unusual. Numerous companies manufactureand/or sell either baker’s yeast or yeast cultures to add to the feed of horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. Diamond V has been doing so for over 60 years. This call, though, had to do with thehealth of the employees at Diamond V-not that of the animals being fed their products. From all indications, it appeared that the employees, who were being exposed regularly to dust fromthe yeast culture during its production, had been experiencing significant health benefits. Over the lastcouple of years this has become public knowledge, but when I first started looking into the matter no oneat Diamond V seemed to want to talk about it. The “official” word was that their products were manufacturedfor animal consumption only, not for humans. Later I was told that clinical and laboratory studieswith humans were underway, but results from those tests weren’t yet available. Even later, I discoveredthe company was in negotiations with others regarding marketing their product for human consumptionand couldn’t discuss the matter with me.All of the studies up to that point involved farm animals. And for over 60 years, as a feed supplementit has performed well-very well. It improves digestion, muscle weight gain, litter weights, milkproduction, conditioning, and even survivability in all the various animals it’s been tried on. Some ofthe studies I reviewed are over 20 years old, and in not one of those studies could I find any ill effects ordownside to using the material. I spoke with several companies that incorporated the yeast product intotheir custom animal feeds, both here in the US and in New Zealand. Everyone seemed to like the product.I began to use it on my ranch as well, and continue to do so.It was the human health aspect, however, was-and still am-most interested in.Good Health Is in the AirWhen Diamond V checked their health claim records, they found something very peculiar. The plantworkers, who came into contact with the yeast products, weren’t getting sick. The support staff (accountantsand the like), however, took sick leave at rates that were comparable to most companies across thecountry. After accounting for all the other possible factors, it appeared the improved health of those inthe production plant could be traced to their repeated exposure to the fermented yeast culture dust in theproduction plant. Subsequent interviews revealed, time and time again, that an employee’s health pictureoften changed dramatically after coming to work at Diamond V Mills. Some, despite experiencing yearly flu and colds in the past, reported they had not had either in theyears since they started work at the plant. The vice president of operations is married to an ER nurse. Before taking the job at Diamond V, he,his wife, and his children routinely came down with colds, flu, and other infections-undoubtedly broughthome from the hospital by his wife. He took the job with Diamond V nine years ago, and he hasn’texperienced colds, flu, or an infectious disease for the last seven years. His wife and children, however, continue to succumb to several infections each year.Another employee, along with his twin sister (who didn’t. work at the plant), was diagnosed ashaving the congenital disease retinitis pigmentosa (RP)-a condition that eventually leads to completeblindness as clumps of pigment begin to accumulate on the retina. There is no medical treatment. Visiongenerally begins to fail when one reaches their 30s, and blindness is typical within 15 to 20 years. After30 years of working in the dusty plant, this employee’s RP hadn’t progressed at all-while his sister hadlost 90 percent of her sight. The story was pretty much the same for the other 35 individuals who worked in the plant. Somehadn’t experienced a cold, flu, or other infection in 25 years. Others reported improvement in chronicallergy conditions, autoimmune problems, gastrointestinal health, and numerous other conditions afterstarting work at the plant.Researchers then began to take a closer look at the effects yeast cultures might have on humans.Their findings were amazing, to say the least. After more research and product development, the companycame up with a more concentrated product for humans. Very significant health benefits have nowbeen associated with the ingestion of this product. (FASEBj06;20(4):A143)Immune Function on the RiseIn past articles I’ve discussed at length the importance of natural killer (NK) cell activity. NK cellsare your ingestion of the concentrated yeast culture. This increased efficiency allowed the immunesystem to perform at superior levels with fewer NK cells-sparing the body the stress and expenditure ofhaving to produce more NK cells. It also improved the ratio of immune helper cells to suppressor cells. In the simplest terms, helpercells (CD4 cells) are crucial in coordinating the response of the immune system to pathogens. They activateother immune cells and stimulate the production of antibodies. Suppressor cells (CD8 cells), on theother hand, help maintain a balance so your immune system doesn’t “over-react.” They stop an attack.Individuals taking the yeast culture also exhibited higher levels of antibodies, indicating their immunesystems were more effective. What I believe to be one of the most important findings of all has to do with levels of what’s calledIgA.Building the Immune BarrierThe increase in antibiotic-resistant respiratory diseases has become an ever-increasing, worldwideconcern. I’ve said before that it’s not if we’ll have a worldwide respiratory epidemic, it’s just of matterof when.TB, SARS, and bird flu are just a few examples of such serious threats beginning to emerge. It ismy hope and prayer that bird flu will simply fade away. We continue to see periodic outbreaks in partsof Asia, but hopefully it won’t spread any further. Since this flu strain and other viruses and bacteria areconstantly mutating, I have little hope that any vaccine will afford protection. Trying to create a vaccinebrings up the vision of my three-year-old popping soap bubbles from a bubble machine. By the timehe’s lucky enough to catch and break one, there are dozens more released into the air. If one of thesepathogens becomes virulent and able to pass from human to human, we’re going to need more than justpromises of a possible vaccine. In chickens, the bird flu is so virulent that if one chicken out of 100,000 is infected, within 24 hours50,000 chickens would be dead. Within 48 hours the whole 100,000 would be dead. Admittedly theseanimals would be in immediate contact with each other, but our propensity to travel these days wouldallow a similar, highly infectious human disease to spread more quickly than ever seen in history. Thereare projections showing if an individual was infected in Asia and then immediately boarded a plane forthe US, by the time he/she arrived they would have potentially led to the infection of as many as 10,000individuals.Again, I hope nothing like this ever happens. Luckily, most of these pathogens simply fade away.Unfortunately, however, the underlying factors for such a pandemic certainly seem to be in place. I’d beremiss if I didn’t at least warn you of the possibility and pass along any tools I uncover that could helpprotect you and your family. If a situation like this ever does arise, this yeast culture product could be agodsend. You’re undoubtedly aware that respiratory illnesses, and many other diseases as well, enter the bodyeither through the nose, the eyes, or the gastrointestinal tract-from the mouth to the anus. This explainsthe standard hygiene recommendations during cold and flu season: Wash your hands repeatedly; coveryour mouth and nose when sneezing; and keep your hands away from your mouth, nose, and eyes. Evenfollowing these precautions, however, doesn’t provide total protection. The vice president mentionedearlier undoubtedly still had the same viral and bacterial exposure to his wife as did his children. Hisability to stay well had more to do with his immune system than with his hygiene. Our first line of defense against ingesting pathogens is a protective mucus layer. Immunoglobin A(IgA) is an antibody found in the mucosal lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts and an indicatorof mucosal barrier strength. The research showed that the ingestion (even if through inhalation) of thisfermented yeast culture was directly associated with astoundingly higher levels of IgA. This was obviouslyone of the determining factors as to whether one contracted an infectious disease or went years ordecades without any infection whatsoever. I suspect this will also be a deciding factor in who survivesand who succumbs if we’re ever hit with a virulent worldwide pandemic. (As an interesting side note,it’s the presence often in the “first millr” or colostrums that help protect newborns from infection.)One of the head researchers of this yeast culture showed the laboratory findings to a colleague whowas highly trained and well-respected in the field of immunology. The colleague responded that thelevel of immune markers in individuals ingesting this product was much higher than that seen in otherhumans. This, in turn, gave those people’s immune systems significantly more ability to kill viruses, bacteria, and tumor cells.Simple Health From a Complex CompoundLike many other natural products, yeast cultures are very complex-and there are unquestionablydozens of components that contribute to its efficacy. The compounds in the human product developed byDiamond V included some surprises:Selenium, a powerful antioxidant. Insufficient selenium in the diet allows viruses to mutate, whichhelps explain why we see most of the flu viruses arising from areas within China. A large part of thatcountry has soil that is seriously deficient in selenium. Historically, the major epidemics of avian influenzahave occurred in parts of the world with selenium-deficient soils. And practically all of the localoutbreaks of avian influenza can be traced back to areas of severe selenium deficiency.Squalene, a steroid precursor normally found in only a few species of sharks and a few plants. It’sone of the key immune-boosting components responsible for the marketing of shark liver oil.Resveratrol, one of the true “anti-aging” compounds, which is normally found in grape skins andred wine. They’ve also found it contains all the primary minerals, trace minerals, amino acids, and several Bvitamins, as well as other beneficial compounds normally found only in foods like blueberries and greentea.Ingestion of the yeast culture increases glutathione levels as well. As I’ve discussed at length in thepast, there is a direct relationship between your glutathione levels and health and longevity. It’s typicalfor glutathione levels to decrease as a person ages, but individuals who are able to maintain higher levelsof glutathione live longer and healthier lives. The lab tests have also revealed that the yeast culture has over three times the antioxidant capacity ofany known food. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of the product was shown to be 614,which is almost four times the highest ORAC-value food, black raspberries, which has a value of 164.[Edit(JT’s note: F(JT more information about what DRAC is, and how to interpret the numbers, visit theSubscriber Center at the Alternatives Web site, www.drdavidwilliams.com.]Proven Safety...All of the studies conducted so far have revealed that this cultured yeast product is non-toxic andsafe.Extensive toxicology studies have been undertaken, and even at extremely high dosages there hasnever been any indication of any side effects. It has also been tested for pesticides (over 139 of the mostcommon) and toxic residues--and it contains neither.Additional tests have been performed to determine if it interferes with over-the-counter or prescriptionmedications-and it doesn’t.I’m sure one concern for many people has to be the fact that the product is a yeast culture. Individualsbothered with systemic infections from the yeast Candida albieans are hesitant about including anyyeast products in their diet. Yeast infections have been linked to numerous chronic health problems. It’simportant to remember, however, that this product is a dried, fermented yeast culture. As opposed to live yeast, this culture contains the fermented metabolites of a once-live colony ofyeast, as well as the dead yeast itself and the residue of the medium it was grown on. It doesn’t transferlive yeast organisms to your GI tract, but instead facilitates and increases the growth of the existingbeneficial bacterial Sma. Most everyone has Candida albieans and dozens of other potential pathogensliving in their lower GI tract, but few of those people go on to experience any problems-because theirlevel of beneficial bacteria is sufficient to keep the pathogens in check.Research has shown that much of our immunity and ability to survive is stimulated by a limitedexposure to a wide variety of these controlled pathogens. For example, repeated studies have shown thatchildren raised in more sterile environments suffer fur more allergies than children raised around petsand allowed to play in the dirt and outside environment....and Gut-Level BenefitsIn effect, components of this product work as a “prebiotic” to feed the beneficial bacteria in yourgut. (Don’t forget to keep taking your probiotics and fermented food to replenish the beneficial bacterialas well.) Beneficial bacteria produce secondary byproducts or “metabolites” that inhibit the growthof harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. The yeast culture also provides its own, verypotent metabolites.Very minute levels (we’re talking one part per billion) of this product have been shown to totallyinhibit the growth of E. coli, the bacteria most commonly associated with food poisoning. It also completelystopped the growth of Candida tropiealis, which is the second most commonly encounteredpathogen and a major cause of blood poisoning (septicemia)particularly among individuals with diabetes, leukemia, or lymphoma. The combination of dead yeast and metabolites in this yeast culture also increases mass in the gastrointestinaltract, and improves fiber and protein digestion by supplying a long list of various nutrients andenzymes. For example, one of the enzymes was found to be phytase-necessary for the proper utilization ofphosphorus, which is essential for bone health.Prevention Rather Than a CureI have yet to uncover any downside to using this product on a regular and continuing basis. One ofthe strongest attributes of this product is the fact that it balances the immune system rather than acts asan immune stimulant. This is an extremely important point to keep in mind.Individuals who suffer from what are called autoimmune diseases can make their condition worse bytaking anything that over stimulates their immune system. Their immune systems have lost their abilityto distinguish normal healthy cells from pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) and will readilyattack healthy cells. For example, in type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the islet cells in thepancreas that produce insulin. In rheumatoid arthritis it attacks the joints. Other examples of autoimmunedisease include multiple sclerosis (MS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Graves disease. This is a product you can (and should) take on a consistent basis to help keep your immune systembalanced without overstimulation.Since it’s not a stimulant, it wouldn’t be used as a “treatment” for some acute problem like a cold orflu. Instead, it’s something that can be taken continuously to prevent a cold, flu, or other infection fromhappening in the first place. It’s a maintenance-type product that has a long history of being safe and effectivefor long-term use.
Getting the YeastDiamond V Mills has a few different cultured yeast products for animals; the formulations are essentiallythe same except for their concentration. The most concentrated, and the one I use and recommend,is called Diamond V XPC. It’s based on the yeast Saccharomym cerevisiae. The medium on which the yeast is grown consists of processed grain byproducts, roughage products, cane molasses, malt, and comsyrup. (The natural sugars are necessary to feed the yeast.)The yeast they use is also commonly referred to as baker’s yeast or brewer’s yeast. It is one of the most researched yeasts and has been used for centuries for making bread, beer (particularly ales.. .my favorite),and wine. Diamond V reportedly utilizes a proprietary technique to both grow and dry the yeast, which helps maintain its health-promoting benefits. When the company discovered that cultured yeast could benefit humans as well as animals, it formeda subsidiary called Embria Health Sciences to sell the newly developed product under the name EpiCor.This product is now being sold through several different companies. Although all the original benefitsI’ve discussed-reduced sick days, improved immune health-are a direct result of ingesting the productscreated for animals, the company literature says that EpiCor and Diamond V XPC are somewhat different. There are a number of differences I’m sure of, and a couple I can guess at.For one, the company says the drying process is different so the product retains more of its antioxidantcapability. From the company’s product specification sheets I’ve obtained, it appears that theEpiCor may also have a higher protein level.Based on the information I’ve received, I’ll speculate on another difference. Mter introducing theEpiCor branded product, Diamond V Mills released a new version of the animal product XPC calledXPC LS. The LS product is designated as suitable for use in organic production. The production differenceseems to be that the grains used in producing the yeast culture are non-GMO grains (geneticallymodified organism). This would lead me to believe that the EpiCor product is also probably producedusing a non-GMO base as well. The biggest difference I see between the two products, however, is the price. A 30-day supply ofEpiCor (consisting of thirty 500 mg capsules) sells for anywhere: Tom about ‘20 to ‘50. A 50-pound bagof Diamond V XPC sells at feed stores for anywhere from $1.50 to $1.75 a pound. From the company’s point of view, a significant difference is that EpiCor is made in a food-gradefacility, while the Diamond V products are made in a feed-grade plant. I’m sure that matters to the FDA,but it doesn’t matter to me.EpiCor has the FDA safety status of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). XPC doesn’t, but thenproducts for animals generally don’t. The approval process is lengthy and expensive, and not necessaryfor animal feed. Nevertheless, both are obviously safe, nontoxic, pesticide-free, and non-mutagenic.They both have the same reported shelf life: a minimum of 24 months from the date of manufacture.Getting the Right AmountRecommended dosages for XPC vary significantly depending on the size of the animal For example,a racehorse might be given 14 grams a day, whereas an ostrich might be given only 3.5 grams a day. Thecompany’s literature obviously doesn’t provide dosages for human use, but, if you use body weight asthe determining factor, I would guess the dosage for an adult human would be somewhere in the ballparkof 2 to 3 grams a day. A child’s dosage would probably be anywhere from ‘h to 1 gram a day.At the time the company first noticed the effect the product had on humans, they carried out tests tosee approximately how much was being taken in daily by the workers. Diamond V used the results ofthese tests to determine the dosage of EpiC or to be ‘h gram per day.Based on the dosage figures I mentioned earlier, a daily dose of EpiC or, from the least expensivesupplier I could find, would run about 66 cents. As I mentioned earlier, one of the differences between Diamond V’s various products is their concentration. The dosage of XPC that’s equivalent to half a gram of EpiC or is about 3 grams. That higherdaily dosage of XPC, at the highest price, would cost just over a penny a day.I’m going into such detail because I don’t see how anyone can pass on this deal. I’ve personallynever seen a better bargain when it comes to balancing your immune system. If you utilize the XPCproduct, you can help give your body some of the best protection ever documented for a penny a day.1his is another product my dad would certainly call “cheap insurance.”I’m sure the company won’t like the comparisons I’m making, but the facts are there. And for severalreasons they can’t recommend that humans use XPC. But it wasn’t EpiCor that bestowed all theend benefits on the employees at Diamond V Mills; it was the lesser concentrated animal products. Andthose products have been used successfully on all types of animals for over 63 years without incident.Like it or not, we too are animals.Ignorance Isn’t Bliss, It’s just UnhealthyBuying this product in bulk animal form for human use isn’t Diamond V Mills’ preferred way ofselling the product. I really don’t think it should be a worry for them, however. Only a small percentageof the population in this country will read about this. Sadly, our society reads very little. I recently foundthe following statistics on the Internet, which are shocking, to say the least:• 1/.3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.• 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.• 80 percent of US families did not buy or read a book last year.• 70 percent of US adults have not been in a book store in the last five years. and• 57 percent of new books are not read to completion.Obviously, if you’re reading this newsletter you’re in a very select group, not just for reading Alternativesbut because of the fact that you’re reading at all. Regrettably, the majority of the populationwon’t be reading about this or other novel ways to protect their health.

What Is Homeopathy & How It Works
Homeopathy is a gentle, natural system of healing. It is based on the principle that "like cures like", so symptoms are treated with a highly diluted dose of whatever might have caused the symptoms in the first place. Dilution is extreme so there are no active elements in the medicine used to treat the sufferer. Homeopathy can be used on anyone, regardless of age or gender. There are many different illnesses that homeopathy can treat, from sore throats, fever and toothache to chronic illnesses such as anxiety, eczema, asthma and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Homeopathy works on an energetic level, rather than a physical level. The treatments influence the patient's energy system and impacts them emotionally, physically and mentally. Homeopathy can find a disorder in someone's chi, or life force, and act to stimulate the in built healing ability of the body, to bring the balance back.
Homeopathy is like acupuncture in some ways and is equally difficult to explain. Acupuncture also relies on the energy system of the body to restore balance and get rid of physical symptoms. Both homeopathy and acupuncture have a physical component but the healing is impossible to explain in terms of chemical or physical reactions.
Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, looked for an alternative to the brutal healing methods used at the time, such as bloodletting. He created homeopathy in the late eighteenth century. Homeopathy was accepted and became well established in America in the nineteenth century. Homeopathy was taught in medical schools and homeopathic hospitals were common. In the 1930s, homeopathy diminished in popularity for several reasons, including the rise in power of the American Medical Association.
Homeopathy is still popular to this day and is practiced around the world, especially in India and Europe. Literally millions of people use homeopathic healing every year and many people swear by its great results.
There are homeopathic remedies for pretty much any injury or combination of symptoms. They are also used for prevention and to encourage wellbeing. A single medicine contains one active ingredient and is to treat a specific condition. To identify the best remedy for someone, they need to answer a series of questions about their mental, emotional and physical states.
There are also combined medicines for a variety of ailments. These contain several active ingredients. One example is Arnica cream, which is used to treat injuries and muscle aches.
Homeopathic medicines are mostly considered safe, free from side effects and can be used along with mainstream remedies. Finding a homeopath is easier than ever with the recent growth of the alternative health community in the US. You can also find the remedies at health food and new age stores.
There are a couple of concerns about the use of homeopathy. When using a homeopathic treatment, the symptoms might get worse before they get better. This is probably because the body recreates the symptoms when it receives a treatment containing the element that caused them in the first place. Healing begins in the body, strengthening the immune system and fighting the problem you are suffering from.
Homeopathy and conventional Western medicine are very different. There are plenty of believers and also plenty of skeptics. Some people see it as a medicine of the future, as we become more aware of the human energy system and the diverse ways we can heal the body and mind. Homeopathy is expanding, become popular throughout the world and helping many people to heal themselves in a natural, drug-free way.

Avoiding Dementia Possibly Alzheimer's In Your Twilight Years
Keeping your mind sharp is important as you get older, because an active mind is a healthy mind. It can make your winter years more enjoyable and make your life better in general. If you keep engaging and challenging your brain, you can keep it healthy. Activities to help with brain health include healthy dieting and learning new skills. You can do a crossword puzzle each day or learn a new hobby. Choose something that interests you so you can keep motivated and enjoy it.
If you take part in activities which make you assess information quickly, think on your feet and expand your horizons, it will make a lot of difference as you get older. It might take more effort than it did when you were younger but using your brain more will result in an improved memory and better cognitive skills. Many older people blame their age for not being able to do things but if they try, they will find these activities strengthen the brain, so age isn't an excuse!
The brain shrinks as you reach your sixties and some parts shrink more than others, such as the frontal lobe, which handles mental abilities, and the hippocampus which stores memories. The brain thins in the cortex area and the white matter decreases as you get older. This is why the elderly sometimes suffer from brain disorders. The cognitive processing is slowed down by these changes, so it is harder to make decisions, keep a long attention span and solve problems. This will happen as you age, unless you exercise these areas of the brain by enjoying brain-enhancing activities and form new daily memories.
Aging, however, does not result in a decline of brain activity. The brain gets sharper and stronger as you keep using it and skills include problem solving skills and wisdom. Bear in mind that other illnesses might contribute to the normal brain activity declining, although there are ways to keep your brain as healthy as you can.
Simple things such as education can help to stimulate the brain and it might help to strengthen the brain cell networks to prevent damage to the mental functions. Learning a new language can be fun and you might get to try it out one day. Physical activity is beneficial to the brain and an aerobic regime can help with brain health, as the oxygen flowing through the body accesses the brain and makes it healthier. Knowing that there are things you can do can make a difference, contributing to the common good and having a good sense of self can reduce cognitive decline in adults.
To slow down the effects of the brain degenerating, it is worthwhile to make an effort to concentrate and pay attention. Be organized rather than always in a rush, so you can focus properly on what you are doing. Repetition is good. Try to keep stress-free because tension can cause memory lapses. You can turn senior moments into senior memories if you exercise your brain regularly. Do whatever you need to do to preserve your mental agility and stay happy and alert, even if you are getting on in years. When you compare elderly people, you can see that some of them are happy and satisfied and others are depressed and act as though they have given up on life. Make sure you are in the former category and there is no reason why you can't keep your brain active and functioning well.
Allergies
What are Allergies?
Stories of friends and family members unable to enjoy certain foods, participate in activities, or participate in particular environments are all too common.
I developed allergies when I moved to the big city 20 years ago. Pollen and Diary products, I have attributed that to the pollution magnifying a small allergy and turning it into something bigger. (just my own theory) I found a natural cure for part of it anyway, I have pretty much stopped eating process foods, alcohol and caffeine at the beginning of this year. I know that's a big step for a lot of people, my motivation is living and feeling better today not to try and live longer. So far so good, there have been some significant changes.
In fact, 50 million people just in America are estimated to have allergies. This means that a great number of people live with certain lifestyle 'limitations' by what we've come to know as an allergy, which is what an adverse reaction by the immune system to any foreign substance is called.
There is no clear apparent medical reason why people contract allergies, but one thing remains clear: the condition is indiscriminate in its coverage and may affect us regardless of age, gender, or race. Commonly, however, the allergy manifests in our infancy or childhood, although some symptoms may appear at any age or may reappear after any period of apparent inactivity.
Most allergies are largely insignificant and may be dealt with by simple lifestyle choices; however, there is a possibility of them either adversely affecting our daily life, or perhaps life-threatening conditions.
What Causes Allergies?
The immune system is not as smart as we would like it to be, it actually believes pollen and dust are harmful to us and begin the process of removing them from the body. By mistakenly identifying common harmless objects as something it must destroy. It then releases antibodies that cause bodily manifestations or 'symptoms'.
In order to recognize and capture these strangers, it is important that people know who the culprits are. They should try to educate themselves on how allergies work and what causes them because these are the only means to find the solution to the problem.
Below are the most common types of allergies.
- Food Allergies - ignited by certain food types- Anaphylaxis - triggered by drugs, food, or insect stings- Respiratory Allergies - triggered by allergens which are airborne- Contact Allergies - triggered by skin-affecting allergens - Insect Sting Allergies - triggered by insect venom It is of paramount importance to know that many allergies have similar symptoms with other conditions and diseases. That is why it would be best to consult your doctor to assess you condition and give a proper diagnosis.
What can we do about it?
We must first understand how an allergic reaction happens, and more importantly, what we can do by ourselves or with the help of a doctor to detect allergies. In such a way, we will be able to make sure we are not on the threshold of any harm, but also enjoy life without having to worry about dramatic allergic reactions.
When an allergy is triggered', implying that the body has been exposed to a 'trigger' that activated the allergy from within. These 'triggers', known as potential allergens, may be animal fur and dander, feathers, mites, house dust, pollen, cockroach droppings, insect stings, chemicals (like perfumes, and even our everyday cosmetics like shampoos and soaps!) and dyes, medication, synthetic fiber, and a huge variety of food and drinks.
Knowing what happens in our bodies, we can now better understand how to detect allergies when possible symptoms surface. In essence, we are familiar with some common symptoms that have been associated with allergies.
Of course the best thing to do is identify whether you have a food intolerance or allergy and then eliminate the problem foods altogether from your diet. If you are embarking on an elimination diet or removing foods from your diet due to a food allergy or food intolerance, take care to replace the foods you remove with suitable alternatives to ensure you maintain your health and wellbeing. If your food allergy symptoms disappear during the diet you can try and reintroduce suspect foods to see if they cause you a reaction.
But basically, one first hand “cure” or initial activity to be done in the management of asthma allergy is to avoid the source of the allergens to which the individual is allergic to.
Taking responsibility for your own health is the first major step and the fact that you are reading this indicates that you may be interested in investigating natural solutions for your asthma and allergy symptoms. One reason your doctor may be unaware of an effective, natural drug-free asthma and allergy treatment is that they generally are very busy and simply don't have the time to do the research about it. Obtaining allergy relief through natural means is the best route to take without incurring side effects, however, if the allergy is severe and debilitating then prescription or over the counter medications may be needed.
If For those who experience the severe food allergy reactions, a dose of epinephrine (adrenaline), either self- injected or given by the doctor can immediately reverse the symptoms. Prescribed allergy treatment usually consists of immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots, which expose allergy sufferers to tiny amounts of the offending allergens in gradually increased doses that over time decrease symptoms.
If you suspect your child has a food allergy, the first step is to keep a diet and symptom diary - write down everything that your child eats and drinks, and note down any symptom, as well as the quantity and time it took for the symptoms to occur. Once you have been diagnosed with an allergy, you now have a weapon you can use against the substances that cause your allergic reaction – knowledge. Medication for allergy relief must be administered by doctors depending on the severity of symptoms.
You don't have to suffer because it is allergy season. Moreover, there are a lot of therapies which are beneficial both natural and through mainstream medicine as I like to call it. Save your money - skip the latest book promising easy solutions for type 2 diabetes and weight loss.
According to a study by the National Institute of Health people with an increased risk for type II diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through exercise and proper nutrition. Let’s face it, it is time to break away from the traditional diets that are recommended for people with type 2 diabetes, and formulate new diets based on reason, and not just assumption. As soon as a person is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they are automatically given a diet sheet outlining the types and proportions of foods that are recommended as being suitable for diabetics.
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) also known as maturity-onset diabetes, type 2 because it typically occurs in obese people over 35 years of age, although some obese children have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes due to lack of exercise and poor diet. There are two types of diabetes, Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) also known as juvenile-onset diabetes, type 1 diabetes and Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) also known as maturity-onset diabetes, type 2 diabetes.
Obesity, was long known as a leading cause of type II diabetes, but the high prevalence of childhood obesity could be the evidence that it possible accelerates the onset of type 1 diabetes in various young populations. Many research teams are still working on this immune system problem that seems to be the root cause of type 1 diabetes (sometimes called auto-immune diabetes). This type of diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic cells.
In type 1 diabetes the body’s immune system destroys the pancreas beta cells resulting in low insulin levels. Unlike Type I diabetes, where there is little to no insulin being produced by the beta cells of the pancreas, in Type II diabetes there is plenty of insulin. By diabetes type 2, the cells in the body do not react properly by stimulation from insulin.
Additionally, as Type II diabetes is sometimes not diagnosed for many years, the pancreas will sometimes stop producing insulin all together since the body sees no need to make something that can't be used. Type I diabetes, also known as adolescent diabetes, differs from Type 2 in that the body stops producing insulin altogether. There are also natural products in the market that can help to normalize the blood sugar level by diabetes type 2. please seek advice from your Health Care Professional
Carbs, carbs, carbs!!! People are eating to much bread and pasta it tastes great especially with peanut butter, cream cheese or store bought spaghetti sauce laced with even more sugar (read the label) The body turns carbs to sugar. Isn't that just what we need, more sugar? Also on the issue of obesity did you ever make paper mache in school or with your kids? See what happens to white flour when mixed with water and allowed to sit around. Something similar happens in the gut especially when mixed with protein like meats etc. It just sits there in a glutinous mass for to long. Then we slug down a few cans of soda (12 teaspoons of sugar per can, except Gingerale which only has 9 teaspoons)Do what ever you and your kids have to do to cut back on this type of food. It is killing you and sickening millions of people.
